The warm weather has our regular observers in high spirits as they report the presence of a large number of whales.

   

Expert conclusions: toxic algae are the cause of exceptional deaths

A bloom of toxic algae, also known as a red tide, caused most of the deaths of fish, birds and marine mammals reported drifting or washed up along the shores in the St. Lawrence in the final three weeks of August.

   

Humpback whale and southern right whale on road to recovery

According to the 2008 update of the IUCN Red List, these whales are recovering from the excesses of past whaling. On the other hand, other cetacean species are regressing, particularly small, coastal cetaceans and freshwater dolphins.
